Gyan Yog Breath Yoga Teacher Training School
Yoga is an ancient discipline which is comprised of a variety of practices, such as asanas, meditation, and pranayama. Gyan Yog Breath assists the practitioner in unifying soul, body, and mind, in order to pursue a personal spiritual journey.
There are numerous forms of Yoga, that have developed in different places, at different times, and with slightly different objectives. These range from Yoga Nidra, which aims to release traumas from the subconscious while in a semi-sleep state, to Karma Yoga which is all about selfless work.
However, Yoga is fundamentally about balance. The most concise and elegant definition comes from Patanjali: ‘Yoga Chitta vritti nirodha’, or the removal of the fluctuations of the mind.
At Gyan Yog Breath, we see that everything we do in Yoga is connected. For example, meditation practice helps us witness our thoughts from a different perspective and space; with this awareness, we can learn to relax our mind and to avoid mental fluctuations. This kind of balance will also positively affect our relationships. Asana practice creates space in our body, allows prana to flow and helps to release any physical imbalances – this, in turn, makes our mind calmer.
A consistent and long-term yoga practice helps us to be grounded, unified, and to see reality for what it really is.
What is meditation?
The term meditation is often misused to signify the techniques that are used in order to try to attain a state of meditation. When one achieves the true state of meditation, there are no thoughts or distractions – the mind is calm, and everything simply is at it is. However, this takes a considerable amount of practice to achieve.
Meditation exercises help us to see our thoughts from an objective point of view, which in turn leads to clarity of mind, to see reality as it is. We often struggle to differentiate our thoughts from ourselves and therefore let us control them. This makes it easy to get lost and overwhelmed in a spiral of thoughts that take us to the past, to the future, to other places, and essentially distract us from the present and from reality.
There are a vast number of meditation techniques, ranging from dancing to chanting to sitting in silence and focusing on the breath. All of these techniques help us to gain a clearer view of reality and to move upwards on our spiritual journey, whether by releasing emotional blockages, opening chakras, or simply helping us to calm our minds.
